Allies' military backing for Ukraine is paying off on the battlefield, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says, as he hosts a new round of talks on boosting Kyiv militarily. Noting that Ukrainian forces have begun their counter-offensive in the south of the country, Austin says that "now, we're seeing the demonstrable success of our common efforts on the battlefield." On March 30, Russia's foreign minister made his first visit to China since the start of the war in Ukraine, declaring that Moscow and Beijing will move towards a "multipolar, just, democratic world order". US President Joe Biden, meanwhile, told a business roundtable meeting that the US must lead what he described as a "new world order". So what does Russia's invasion of Ukraine say about the new global balance of power? Michael Cox, Emeritus Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics, joined us for Perspective to tell us more.
Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands plan to provide Ukraine with at least 100 refurbished Leopard 1 battle tanks in the coming months.
President Vladimir Putin says that Russia is being threatened by German tanks "again" as it was during World War II, warning that Moscow is ready to respond to aggression from the West. Speaking on the 80th anniversary of the Red Army's victory over Nazi Germany in the Battle of Stalingrad, Putin compares the Third Reich's invasion of the USSR to Germany's supply of Leopard tanks to Ukraine.
The announcement comes one day after the United States and Germany both announced they are sending battle tanks to Ukraine, the first stage of a coordinated effort by the West to provide dozens of the heavy weapons to help Kyiv as Russia's invasion enters its 12th month.
