FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said that in November Pfizer offered the Trump Administration more COVID-19 vaccines. Gottlieb says the Trump administration rejected the offer. The NY Times reports that Pres. Trump rejected 100 million doses of Pfizer's recently approved COVID-19 vaccine over the summer. It's generally thought that once the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, front-line healthcare workers and nursing home residents will be first in line. But according to Gizmodo, bank tellers may get to skip the line--past them, and past the over-65's and those with underlying conditions. The industry trade group American Bankers Association has asked federal health authorities to designate consumer-facing bank employees as 'essential workers.' Such a designation would give them vaccine prioritization once the Federal Food and Drug Administration grants emergency-use authorization. To date, the U.S. has seen nearly 15 million COVID-19 cases and 280,000 deaths--the most in the world. The CDC predicts 19,500 new deaths will be reported during the week of Christmas, and that another 300,000 COVID-19 cases will be added in December.
An FDA advisory committee will meet next month to discuss an emergency use authorization. The emergency use authorization would be for Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine. Earlier this week, Pfizer said clinical trials had shown its vaccine to be 95% effective. "While we cannot predict how long the FDA's review will take, the FDA will review the request as expeditiously as possible, while still doing so in a thorough and science-based manner," FDA Commissioner Stephen M. Hahn In October, the Emergency Care Research Institute warned against releasing a vaccine. They said six months of follow-up data on clinical trial participants is needed to move forward.
There are currently two COVID-19 vaccines promising results from their Phase 3 trials. Moderna announced that its vaccine was 94.5% effective. The stock market took a dive on Friday on news that US President Donald Trump has tested positive for COVID-19. According to Business Insider, industry experts think the cruise industry could take a hit from the news. Macquarie analyst Paul Golding says an event raising the visibility of the virus could 'potentially alter the timeline for full resumption for the cruise lines.' Golding added that anything that increases the likelihood of a new administration in January could negatively impact cruise supply and demand. He explained that a new administration would likely be less sympathetic toward cruise lines reopening without a vaccine. Furthermore, a Biden administration would likely be 'more keen to follow doctor, scientist, and expert recommendations.'
