The EU is to better protect journalists from political interference under an unprecedented media freedom law adopted by the European Parliament. The legislation, backed in a vote by 464 EU lawmakers, with 92 against and 65 abstaining, also enshrines editorial independence and seeks to improve transparency on media ownership. IMAGES
More than 400 million European voters will choose a new five-year EU parliament between June 6 and 9 next year, announces the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. "Every person, in every member state, will go to vote" she says, "your vote matters". The White House condemns a "dramatic deterioration" of human rights in Nicaragua following the arrest there of a Catholic bishop and critic of the government. "There has been a dramatic deterioration of respect for democratic principles and human rights by the regime in Nicaragua, including the imprisonment of democratic leaders, members of the political opposition, students and journalists," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tells reporters.
