Residents of Mexico City described their ordeals the morning after a deadly earthquake on Wednesday killed over 200 people and destroyed several dozen buildings. One survivor described how she was unable to escape her apartment and could only look on in horror as the quake shook the building. A different resident was able to leave her apartment, but feared for her life in doing so.
A 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Mexico, destroying several buildings in the country's capital of Mexico City and leaving over 240 people dead on Tuesday. Emergency services carried out rescue operations as they searched for survivors trapped in the surrounding buildings. Tuesday's earthquake comes just a matter of weeks after an 8.1 magnitude quake also struck central Mexico and killed nearly 100 people, mainly in the city of Oaxaca.
