The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly isolated Russia on Thursday, marking one year since Moscow invaded Ukraine by calling for a "comprehensive, just and lasting peace" and again demanding Russia withdraw its troops and stop fighting. Just a day after China's top diplomat visited Moscow and pledged a deeper partnership with Russia, Beijing abstained on the vote. The resolution was adopted on Thursday with 141 votes in favor and 32 abstentions. Six countries joined Russia to vote no.
Artillery battles currently make up the vast majority of fighting in Ukraine. While the US and Western allies are sending modern artillery, Soviet-era material still makes up around ¾ of Ukraine’s arsenal. FRANCE 24's Chief Foreing Editor Rob Parsons reports.
In the Kiev region, where Russian troops withdrew at the beginning of April, investigations are underway to document the war crimes committed by Russia. For the past six weeks, French experts from the Gendarmerie's criminal research institute have been working in destroyed buildings and have accumulated evidence that they have handed over to the Ukrainian justice system. An 11-year-old Ukrainian refugee has made it all the way to Slovakia from the city of Zaporozhzhia, the site of Ukraine’s largest nuclear power plant which was captured by Russian forces last week. The boy’s mother sent him on the 1000-kilometer journey alone by train to find relatives, staying behind to care for her sick mother who can't be moved.
