Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told Sweden not to expect his backing for its bid to join NATO after Swedish police allowed a Quran to be burned by a protestor outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.
The country is asking the NATO hopefuls to hand over some 33 people sought on terrorism charges, Turkish justice minister said on Wednesday.
Turkey's parliament is set to vote on Sweden's bid to join NATO after President Erdogan submitted a protocol for Stockholm's admission into the military alliance.
Images of Turkish fighter jets taking off from a military base in Diyarbakir to carry out strikes against positions and targets of Kurdish fighters in northern Syria. According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, "Turkey carried out air strikes this evening at 23:00 (20:00 GMT) in the regions of Tel Rifat, Cizire and Derik in northern Syria and destroyed 30 targets". Since Sunday evening, Ankara has been carrying out a campaign of drone bombings, which left at least nine people dead on Thursday, against PKK and YPG targets in Syria, in retaliation for the attack that wounded two policemen in Ankara on Sunday. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that he expects Sweden to take concrete steps against terrorism as per agreement between the two countries in return for Ankara ratifying Stockholm's NATO accession. Speaking after the NATO summit in Vilnius, Erdogan said Sweden will support updating Turkey's customs agreement with the European Union as well as visa-free travel.
