The US Department of Justice sues Apple for illegally maintaining a monopoly for its iPhone by stifling competition and imposing exorbitant costs on consumers. "Apple has maintained monopoly power in the smartphone market not simply by staying ahead of the competition on the merits, but by violating federal antitrust law," US Attorney General Merrick Garland tells reporters. A damning Justice Department report cites "major failures" by Texas police who waited until 21 people had been killed by a mass shooter at a school before finally intervening. Nineteen young children and two teachers were killed when a teenage gunman went on a rampage at Robb Elementary School in May 2022 in America's worst school shooting in a decade. Police eventually shot and killed the gunman. SOUNDBITE
A former US ambassador to Bolivia and member of the National Security Council has been charged with spying for Cuba for 40 years, US Attorney General Merrick Garland announces.
