Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was handed a one-year prison sentence by a Paris court on Thursday (September 30) after being found guilty of illegal campaign financing over his failed 2012 re-election bid.
A French court on Thursday handed former president Nicolas Sarkozy a one-year sentence for illegal financing of his 2012 re-election bid, dealing a fresh blow to the right-winger six months after a conviction for corruption. FRANCE 24's Marc Perelman gives his analysis.
Sarkozy, 66, who denied any wrongdoing, was not in court to face the ruling. His lawyer has confirmed that he will appeal.
He is the first former French leader to be handed out a prison sentence that includes time with no remission.
A Moscow court throws out jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's appeal against a nine-year prison sentence that he and his allies condemn as politically motivated. Moscow City Court ruled to "leave the sentence without changes" and for it to enter into force immediately, meaning that Navalny will be transferred to a strict regime prison colony to serve out his term, after he was found guilty in March of embezzlement and contempt of court.
