Chancellor Angela Merkel admits Germany benefited from a decision by Balkan nations to close their borders to migrants seeking to head north, even as she insisted that it was not a long-term solution.
As the EU struggles to reach a deal with Turkey on halting the flow of migrants and more member states shut their borders, minors – many of them unaccompanied – are among the most vulnerable of the thousands of people amassing at Europe’s frontiers.
Around 20,000 migrants remain stranded at several Greek camps on the border with Macedonia, while European Union leaders meet in Brussels for an extraordinary summit on the migrant crisis where they will discuss closing the Balkans route used by most migrants to reach Europe
