US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accuses Russian President Vladimir Putin of trying to use the Israel-Hamas war in a bid to reduce Western support for Ukraine. "Putin is very much trying to take advantage of the Hamas attack on Israel in the hopes that it will distract us... and that it will result in the United States pulling back its resources" from Ukraine, Blinken tells a Senate hearing. US President Joe Biden says that both Hamas militants attacking Israel and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in his invasion of Urkaine are seeking to "annihilate" neighboring democracies. "Hamas and Putin represent different threats, but they share this in common: They both want to completely annihilate a neighboring democracy," Biden says in a rare televised address from the Oval Office. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken voices hope that a successful offensive by Ukraine would force Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending its invasion. "Success in the counteroffensive would do two things -- it would strengthen its position at any negotiating table that emerges, and it may have the effect as well of actually causing Putin to finally focus on negotiating an end to the war that he started," Blinken tells a joint news conference with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
