Trade unions hold an anti-fascist protest in Rome, after violent protests last week in the centre of the city against the extension of the government's coronavirus pass led to a storming of the CGIL trade union. Calls have grown in Italy for a ban on the far-right group Forza Nuova, whose leaders were among those arrested after the storming of the union. IMAGES

"It does not have to be 'sine die', it does not have to be an infinite period. It will be enough with a few more months if we know how to work on a reform of social protection mechanisms —because we have many workers without coverage— and on favouring active employment policies."
Trade unions insist the current regulations are necessary to protect workers. According to the Prime Minister the reforms are essential to lift Italy's economy out of a perpetual stillness.
