125 years ago: the start of a unique success story. In July 1894, the world's first competitive Horseless Carriages Contest takes place from Paris to Rouen. This is the initial spark that kindles Mercedes-Benz's successful motorsport history as two of the winning cars are powered by engines developed by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. For 125 years, engines and vehicles made by Mercedes-Benz and its predecessor brands have secured countless triumphs. Innovative technology + an the will to succeed = success. From the first competitive car race in history in 1894 to current motorsport events: the motorsport activities of Mercedes-Benz and its predecessor brands tell a success story that has its roots in the early days of the automobile. Since the 19th century, these racing and rally cars have frequently been seen in winning positions in sporting competitions. Their triumphs testify to innovative technology, the drivers' uncompromising will to win and excellent teamwork. No other brand has the topic of motorsport built into its DNA over such a long period and as intensively as Mercedes-Benz.
With a little over four weeks to go until the start of the 2019 FIA Formula One season, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport today completed the first laps with its 2019 challenger. Named the Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 EQ Power+, the 2019 contender ran on the 2.98 km Silverstone International Circuit this morning with Valtteri Bottas behind the wheel, to be followed by Lewis Hamilton this afternoon.“The 2019 season will be a new challenge for all of us,” said Toto Wolff, Team Principal & CEO. “The regulations have changed quite substantially. We have to start from scratch, we need to prove ourselves again – against our own expectations and against our competitors. We start the season with zero points, so we’re taking nothing for granted and there’s absolutely no feeling of entitlement to be at the front. In fact, with the regulation change for the new season, every team can have a shot at the title and we’re seeing all of them as a potential threat.”Today’s running constitutes an official 100 km filming day, which the team also uses as a final systems check before the first pre-season test in Barcelona.
Ahead of the F1 Grand Prix race in Monaco this weekend, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport driver Lewis Hamilton discusses the sport and reveals his travel secrets and guilty pleasures when on the road. In a film released today, the four-time Formula One World Champion also reflects on first-race excitement, winning four world titles, facing the 2018 race season head-on, memorable circuits and meeting fans across the world. Through the Marriott Rewards and SP loyalty programmes, fans can also get the chance to meet Lewis Hamilton as well as some of the world’s top athletes, musicians and chefs. But what’s that one essential Hamilton recommends you should never leave home without? Hand sanitising wipes. The meticulous traveller recommends giving the seat area a good wipe down first. You never know who was in that seat before you! Speaking on film, the frequent flier gives the inside track on taking advantage of those hours buckled in to your seat; don a pair of high quality headphones and lose yourself in your favourite playlist; a good book helps wile away the time and will send you to the land of nod so you arrive at your destination energised. If in-flight movies are more your style, treat yourself to a little chocolate (not too much) and for max-comfort, throw a fresh t-shirt and pair of sweat pants into your carry on bag.
