Images from the site of a plane crash and from a hospital in southern India. Fierce rain and winds lashed a plane carrying 190 people before it crash-landed and tore in two at Kozhikode airport, killing at least 18 people and injuring scores more.
A plane flying from Melbourne to Australia's King Island crashed into a shopping centre in Essendon, a suburb of northern Melbourne on Tuesday, killing all five people on board, including the pilot, shortly after taking off from Melbourne's Essendon Airport around 9 AM local time on Tuesday. According to local police, The twin-engine Beechcraft B200 Super King Air is suspected to have suffered engine failure. The plane crashed into the back of a furniture store and a JB Hi-Fi store in the DFO shopping centre, leaving the parking area in flames and killing the pilot, identified as US citizen Max Quartermain, and all four passengers, who have also been identified as US citizens. Pilot Max Quartermain was the co-owner of Corporate and Leisure Aviation, the company which operated the plane. He had a perfect 38-year safety record. According to unconfirmed reports, there were no casualties on the ground. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the incident.
Drone footage captured the smoldering wreckage of a Boeing 747 cargo jet in the devastated village of Dacha-Suu in Kyrgyzstan on Monday, after the plane crashed into the settlement just outside the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek earlier in the day, killing at least 37 people. The plane was reportedly carrying just four crew members, but crashed into the village of Dacha-Suu, just 15 miles from the capital, and killed dozens of civilians on the ground. All of the crew reportedly died in the crash. Some 32 residential buildings in the village were destroyed. The Turkish MyCargo Airlines flight, operating the flight route TK6491, was flying from Hong Kong to Istanbul with a stopover in the Kyrgyz capital. All flights to and from Kyrgyzstan's Manas International Airport have been suspended.
An American Airlines jet blew a tire at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, prompting the flight crew to abort takeoff. Passengers were evacuated from the plane via emergency chute, a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
