  • "Garbage crisis" in Glasgow three weeks before COP26

Glasgow (UK), Oct 13 (EFE) .- (Camera: Guillermo Garrido) The Scottish city of Glasgow is beset by a "garbage crisis", which the City Council denies despite complaints from neighbors and unions, less than three weeks from hosting top world leaders at the COP26 climate summit.FOOTAGE OF THE STREETS IN GLASGOW WITH IMAGES FROM CESSNOCK NEIGHBORHOOD, GLASGOW, SURROUNDING CLIFFORD LANE, WHERE COP26 WILL BE HELD.SOUNDBITES FROM Chris Mitchell - representative of the union GMB in the municipal cleaning services of Glasgow, and Sean Baillie - General Coordinator in Scotland of the GMB union. Also, citizens Ryan and Emma. And finally Zoom Interview with Ellie Harrison, Representative ‘Free Our City’.MITCHELL1. Glasgow is in the middle of a garbage crisis and unfortunately I don't think the city is prepared to host any kind of Conference. The city first needs to take care of itself.-Unfortunately the City Council has made atrocious cuts every year, budget restrictions implemented in services, cleaning has been the most affected.-Glasgow city council claims they spend millions of pounds on cleaning services, but this is certainly not reflected in practice.-Unfortunately people leave the service are not being replaced and that is why we find ourselves in the middle of a garbage crisis.BAILLIE2. To save money, Glasgow City Council for the past ten years has tackled massive cuts, designed to save money and reduce the number of workers employed to fight dirt and clean the streets. This has reduced the capacity to meet the city's cleanup demand.-World leaders who visit Glasgow will see a totally different city from those who live here.-During the next four, three weeks I hope there will be an increase in cleaning by the city council to hide the problems throughout the city.-Once these patches disappear, the problems will be exposed again.-The city will collapse unless there is a serious investment by the British or Scottish Government.RYAN-Considering the environmental factors, consider that they will fly here in private jets that they will fly in their jets, fly here and the use of many means of transport to get around and the use of fossil fuels when coming here. There's no reason why it couldn't have been celebrated online and environmentally friendly, given the times we're in.-Look at all the crises in this city. It is a paint job for the city council to host this COP26, considering the crises that we already have in this city by itself.EMMA-The conference has to change something. I don't think it has to be a yes or a no. I think it has to.-We cannot afford not to change the way we live and work. I hope that changes.-It is important the fact that it is held here -in Glasgow- and if there is no change I think we will all be upset, because the change has to happen.HARRISON-Looking to have (in Glasgow) a free public transport, with a small card for the bus, train and the subway. It is a campaign that we have been here for years.
