Albanian and Serb dog lovers unite to help Kosovo strays

United in their love for canines, an unlikely Albanian and Serb duo have partnered together in Kosovo to run a shelter for abandoned dogs, in a rare example of cooperation in the deeply divided country. More than two decades after the end of Kosovo’s brutal war, distrust continues to divide the country’s Albanian and Serb communities, with few able to speak the other languages and ethnic tensions rarely far from the surface.

  • In Kosovo, an unlikely friendship between a Serb grandmother and her Albanian ‘brother'

An improbable friendship has blossomed between a 92-year-old Serb woman, the only person left in her abandoned Kosovo village, and an ethnic Albanian grocer who has been bringing her food several days a week. Fadil Rama, the 48-year-old shopkeeper who lives several kilometres away in an Albanian-majority village, has continued his trips to visit Vladica Dicic throughout the coronavirus crisis, bringing groceries, news and companionship. The friendship marks a rare bridge between Kosovo's Serb and Albanian communities, whose relations are still defined by lingering mistrust from the former province's 1990s independence war from Serbia.

  • Chinese monk who saved 8,000 strays is dog's best friend

Zhi Xiang is no ordinary animal rescuer: he is a Buddhist monk and has given nearly 8,000 dogs a new life, either at his ancient monastery or at a shelter he runs in Shanghai. He already has nearly 8,000 dogs to feed and care for. A few hundred will eventually be resettled in Europe or North America. "I have to rescue them because if I don't, they will die for sure," said the 51-year-old, who temporarily discards his monk's robes for an orange workman's suit as he gives vaccinations to dishevelled dogs fresh off the streets. Driven by his faith, Zhi has been rescuing animals -- mostly dogs but also cats and other strays -- since 1994.
