Former Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen is now being confirmed for another top job--that of Treasury Secretary in the Biden administration. And according to Business Insider, she says raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour would have little to no impact on employment. Democrats support raising the minimum wage, but it remains a partisan issue due to its potential effects on the economy. GOP lawmakers consistently argue that raising the minimum wage would cost the country millions of jobs. However, Yellen said Tuesday that a $15 minimum wage increase wouldn't significantly impact the job market.
As if the end of the year weren't hard enough, the December jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics said 140,000 jobs were lost last month. According to Business Insider, the data shows all of those lost jobs were held by women. Among the newly-unemployed, Black and Latina women working in retail and education sectors were hit the hardest. The US posted a surprise decline in payrolls in December and all of the 140,000 jobs lost were held by women. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, the US economic recovery has been mostly stagnant. Small businesses nationwide have been hit particularly hard. Many are being forced to lay off staff or close altogether to curb the pandemic's spread.
For three months, they held more jobs than men in the US economy — something that had only occurred one other time in history, during a short period in 2009 and early 2010. Sure, there were still many other gender gaps: women were more likely than men to work part-time, for example, because of caregiving responsibilities at home, and even among full-time workers, they earned on average only 81 cents for every dollar of their male peers. The pandemic quickly changed that story. And now, it just got worse.
The US Federal government's Paycheck Protection Program, or PPP, doled out hundreds of billions of dollars to businesses. The PPP's goal was to assist businesses during the nearly inevitable slowdowns due to the coronavirus pandemic. But according to Business Insider, many minority-owned businesses were left waiting for funds until the final weeks of the program. Many of our businesses were being turned down in the first and second round of funding. That caused application fatigue and frustration. Joseph LaVorgna is the chief economist at the National Economic Council, and is an economic adviser to the Trump administration. And according to Business Insider, LaVorgna on Friday said he felt there was no rush to release a second coronavirus stimulus package. LaVorgna said that despite a disappointing Friday jobs report, he doesn't 'believe the recovery at the moment is in jeopardy.' On Friday, the jobs report that said 10.7 million Americans were unemployed in November. Congress is considering a $908 billion stimulus proposal after months of negotiations. It does not include a $1,200 direct payment.
