Russia does not have sufficient forces on the ground to make a major breakthrough in Ukraine after launching an offensive in the Kharkhiv region, a top NATO commander says Thursday. SOUNDBITE
A Russian court sentences top human rights campaigner Oleg Orlov to two and a half years in jail for denouncing Russia's offensive against Ukraine. The judge finds Orlov guilty for "committing a crime under article 280" ("calls for extremist activity") and orders "imprisonment for a period of two years and six months." Orlov was accused of discrediting the Russian army after writing a column written for the French online publication Mediapart, and fined in October after a first trial. IMAGES

US President Joe Biden will announce new air defense weapons for Ukraine during a visit by President Zelensky Friday, the White House says. "President Biden will announce a new package of military assistance today that includes significant air defense capabilities to help Ukraine," National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan says during a briefing.
