The Israeli military said it had "eliminated" Ahmed Barakat, who it accused of a May 2023 attack that killed an Israeli settler. Jenin and its adjacent refugee camp are a stronghold of armed Palestinian groups opposing Israel, which has occupied the West Bank since 1967. The United States calls the death of six-year-old Gaza girl Hind Rajab, who days earlier had pleaded for help, "heartbreaking" and urges a prompt Israeli investigation. "It is just a devastating account, a heartbreaking account, for this child, and of course there have been thousands of other children who have died as a result of this conflict," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters, adding, "We have asked the Israeli authorities to investigate this incident on an urgent basis."
