Undelivered letters written to French sailors during an 18th century war between Britain and France have finally been opened and studied -- after more than 250 years gathering dust.
The US West Point military academy finds no apparent contents in a 200-year-old time capsule recently discovered inside the base of a monument at West Point, New York, and believed to have been left by cadets in the 1820s. "The box didn't quite meet expectations," says an expert during the unveiling ceremony, adding that his team will collect a layer of silt from the bottom of the box to see if they can find any remains in it. It appears every leap year, on February 29, since 1980 meaning fans of the "La Bougie du Sapeur" newspaper can finally get their hands on issue No. 11 when it hits the shelves from Thursday.
