At a press conference at the European Union-Western Balkans summit, the EU Council President Charles Michel says that believes "the future of our children will be more secure and prosperous with the Western Balkans inside the European Union". Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen both hail the EU's energy support for the region, which von der Leyen says is testament to their shared desire to "tackle the knock-on effects of this atrocious war that Russia has unleashed together". Russia's war in Ukraine has underscored the importance for the EU of bringing the Balkans into its orbit, to stabilise the region and counter the influence there of both Russia and China. SOUNDBITE
