Shark Attack Off Southern California Beach

Description

According to authorities and witnesses on Sunday, a shark attacked a woman wading in the ocean with friends off a popular Southern California beach. The attack occurred Saturday near San Onofre State Beach in northern San Diego County. CBS affiliate KFMB-TV identified the victim as mother-of-three Leeanne Ericson who was at the beach with her boyfriend. KFMB reports that doctors were able to stabilize Ericson, however she remains in a medically induced coma. Chris Lowe, director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach, said the injury was likely caused by a great white or a seven-gill shark, several of which had been spotted in the area recently. The beach was expected to remain closed until Monday.
