The UN rights chief warns that the world needs to change paths to avoid a future filled with military escalation, repression, disinformation, deepening inequality and rampant climate change. "We are at a fork in the road: We can either continue on our current path — a treacherous ‘new normal’ — and sleepwalk into a dystopian future, or we can wake up and turn things around for the better, for humanity and the planet," Volker Turk tells the United Nations Human Rights Council. The UN Human Rights Council votes to demand a halt in all arms sales to Israel, highlighting warnings of "genocide" in its war in Gaza, which has killed more than 33,000 people. The resolution, which passed with 28 of the council's 47 member states voting in favour, six opposed and 13 abstaining, marks the first time the United Nations top rights body has taken a position on the bloodiest-ever war to beset the besieged Palestinian territory. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says he will not allow the European Court of Human Rights to block the government's planned policy of deporting migrants to Rwanda. Speaking after the UK Supreme Court ruled the policy unlawful, he says he will introduce "emergency legislation" to designate Rwanda a safe country. "If the (European Court of Human Rights) chooses to intervene against the express wishes of parliament, I am prepared to do what is necessary to get the flights off" he says. SOUNDBITE
Gang violence in strife-torn Haiti is expanding at "an alarming rate" in areas previously considered quite safe, the UN envoy to the country tells a Security Council meeting. "The horrific violence in gang-ridden areas, including sexual violence, particularly against women and girls, is emblematic of the terror afflicting much of Haiti's population," says Maria Isabel Salvador.
