Florida Keys Residents Demand To Be Allowed To Go Home

Description

Tempers are flaring among residents of the Florida Keys, after federal officials said Monday that the area is "not equipped for re-entry for regular citizenry for weeks." Residents are demanding that they be allowed to return to their homes. Hurricane Irma made landfall Sunday morning on one of the chain of islands that make up the Keys as a Category 4 hurricane.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Irma, which tore through the Caribbean as one of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded, was downgraded to a tropical depression on Monday and is expected to begin dissipating on Tuesday evening. The massive storm prompted the evacuation of 6.5 million people in Florida, the largest evacuation in modern American history. Hurricane Irma killed 43 people in the Caribbean and at least 11 more in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.
