YouTube Experiments With New Breaking News Feature


YouTube is well aware of what is happening in the world today and it wants to keep you up to date and educate its viewers on any questions or concerns they may have. YouTube now has a Breaking News carousel at the top of their website to notify some users of what's happening. As of now, the video site is just testing the feature with some users are it is not clear whether it appears only when they are any breaking news to talk about.

  • Shooting Reported At YouTube's San Bruno Headquarters

    Police in San Bruno, California are responding to an active shooter at YouTube's headquarters Police released a tweet advising people to stay out of the area. Employees posted message over social media describing what was taking place. Photos show people running out of the building, being escorted by police with their hands raised. There are about 1,700 people who work on the campus, located just outside of San Francisco. Google, which owns YouTube, posted that they were coordinating with authorities. The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is also responding. A spokesperson for San Francisco General Hospital reported that it has received patients. The situation is currently still developing.

    YouTube is usually one of the first places to look for breaking news. As spotted by Android Police, Google seems to be making that even easier by adding a “Breaking News” carousel to its mobile apps and homepage. The new section appears similar to a recommended channel on the web homepage. It's also similar to a scrollable carousel in the mobile app between suggested videos. Today, the breaking news section was largely focused on reports of Steve Bannon leaving his position at the White House.
