Protesters in London try to block the removal of migrants from their temporary accommodation, as the UK government began detaining people before controversial deportation flights to Rwanda start. The protesters occupy the road in front of a bus believed to be waiting to take asylum seekers from a hotel in the Peckham area of the British capital to an accommodation barge moored off the south coast of England. A London Metropolitan Police statement said a number of people had been arrested. IMAGES
Police and protesters face off against other at the University of California, Los Angeles as unrest over Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza simmers on US campuses. Officers in riot gear have moved in to start removing some barricades around the protest encampment, with protesters attempting to replace them in turn, and police have used flashbangs to disperse the crowds. Riot police clash with May Day protesters in Istanbul's Sarachane neighbourhood, with tens of thousands of officers deployed across the city to clamp down on similar gatherings. Istanbul's central Taksim Square was closed to rallies after 2013 demonstrations against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government, a move that was ruled a violation of rights by Turkey's top constitutional court in 2023. Protesters and a number of opposition politicians have called for the square to be reopened to labour rallies. IMAGES
