  • China Hands Down Harshest Sentence In Crackdown On Activists

    On Tuesday, China sentenced a prominent rights activist to eight years in jail for subversion. This is the harshest sentence passed in a government crackdown on activism that began more than two years ago. Lawyers of Wu Gan, an online blogger, said Wu plans to appeal against the eight-year sentence. Wu regularly championed sensitive cases of government abuses of power, both online and in street protests. He was detained in May 2015 and charged with subversion.

  • 3 Chinese Students In US Could Be Deported

    According to court papers, three women from China have agreed to plead guilty to cheating on entrance exams to American universities and colleges. They are likely to be deported home. Xiaomeng Cheng pleaded guilty on Wednesday in federal court in Boston to conspiring to defraud the United States. Prosecutors said she gained admission to Arizona State University through the exam scam. The exam in question was the TOEFL, the English-language exam widely used to assess foreign applicants.

  • Ruth Bader Ginsburg Promotes Rights of Minorities In South Korea

    Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg met with South Korea's Chief Justice Yang Seung-tae in Seoul to discuss human rights and the rights of sexual minorities. The visit is the first of its kind since 1987, when Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor visited South Korea, Yonhap reported Tuesday. Ginsburg is in South Korea for five days to meet with various officials in Seoul to discuss the status of legal exchanges and to promote the rights of sexual minorities.
