"Bentley marked 99 years of luxury and performance at Monterey Car Week 2018 through a curated programme of events. The new Mulsanne WO Edition by Mulliner made its debut, alongside WO Bentley’s own 1930 8-Litre – the inspiration for the new flagship Bentley. Each Mulsanne WO Edition is connected to its muse through a slice of the 8-Litre’s original crankshaft, incorporated into a handcrafted drinks cabinet in the rear cabin. A suite of exquisite details, including a polished vertical-vane radiator grille, black wheels, and veneer and leather featuring WO Bentley’s own signature complete the strictly limited run of 100 cars. The highlight of Bentley’s programme of events was Friday evening’s luxury symposium, expertly compèred by Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Robb Report, David Arnold. A conversation on the evolution and future of luxury was brought to life for more than 150 guests through the lenses of fine wine, champagne, music and automotive design via a panel of speakers including David Pearson (CEO, Opus One winery), Richard Beaumont (Head of Krug Champagne), virtuoso cellist and Bentley partner Tina Guo and Bentley’s own Director of Design and Mulliner Coachbuilding, Stefan Sielaff."
On approaching the Flying Spur Mulliner, owners are treated to a moment of pure automotive theatre. As the Bentley name badge above the grille smoothly slides out of view, a beautifully polished ‘Flying B’ bonnet mascot – the sixth iteration of the design - rises to take its place. In perfect synchronicity, headlamps and the delicate clear acrylic wings of the mascot briefly illuminate with a welcoming glow. Standard of the Flying Spur Mulliner, the ‘Flying B’ is also available as an option on all Flying Spurs – with a 97 per cent uptake.Creating that moment, and the elegant ‘Flying B’ mascot that draws every eye, called for a fusion of exceptional design, craft and engineering skills. It’s symbolic of Bentley’s approach to creating unique ownership experiences through relentless attention to detail at every stage. Versions of the Bentley ‘Flying B’ bonnet mascot have been offered since the mid-1920s, with the current design being the sixth iteration. For the latest Flying Spur, Bentley designers and engineers accepted the challenge to take the art and craft of the ‘Flying B’ to the next level. The emblem that graces the radiator of the Flying Spur Mulliner is the first in Bentley history to be deployed electronically, the first to feature a cover plate that replaces it when stowed, the first with clear acrylic wings and the first to be internally illuminated. During development of the new Flying Spur, a shortlist of candidate designs by the in-house team at Crewe was created in prototype form and presented to the Board for selection. The winning design, by Hoe Young Hwang, was the unanimous choice.
The handcrafting of Bentayga Speed is captured in a new film released today by Bentley Motors. Shot entirely at the Bentley factory in Crewe, England, the two-minute film contrasts the stunning 3.8-second 0-60 mph time of Bentayga Speed with the 127 working hours – 16 working days - it takes to craft each car by hand. Bentayga Speed is both the fastest SUV in the world, with a top speed of 190 mph, and the SUV with the highest number of hours committed to exceptional handcraftsmanship.Covering all of the areas of Bentayga production at Crewe, the film celebrates Bentley’s status as the Centre of Excellence for Wood, Leather and 12-cylinder engine manufacture within the Volkswagen Group. The opening scenes in the Wood Shop show highlights of the 10 hours of processing required to turn raw leaves of sustainably sourced wood into finished veneer. Every sheet of wood within a completed car comes from the same tree, to ensure the pattern and colour through the car remain the same, and ages in the same way.
Exceptional design and vast power have been the hallmark features of Bugatti vehicles for around 110 years. The French manufacturer of hyper sports cars now consistently pursues this path further with the new special-edition Centodieci. In addition, Bugatti is echoing its recent history with an exclusive and extraordinary small series.There are many areas in which the new special-edition Bugatti Centodieci echoes the former super sports car of the 1990s. “The challenge was not to allow oneself to be captivated too much by the design of the historic vehicle and work solely in retrospect, but instead to create a modern interpretation of the shape and technology of that time,” says Achim Anscheidt, Head Designer at Bugatti. Even sportier and more extreme than the Bugatti Chiron and Divo hyper sports cars, yet elegant and timeless like the La Voiture Noire, it is a one-of-a-kind Bugatti for the enthusiast.The flat, horseshoe-shaped radiator at the front reveals its depth only from the side view, with the newly developed, deep-seated front spoiler and the three-section air intakes providing a perfect match. The front of the Centodieci drops very low. The iconic Bugatti horseshoe has been reduced accordingly, while the Bugatti logo Macaron sits on the hood, which is interrupted at the centre by a black element. Naturally, customers can have their special-edition Centodieci painted in the Bugatti colour of their choice. The small series, limited to ten vehicles (and already sold out) and handcrafted in Molsheim, France, will be delivered in two years at unit prices starting at EUR 8 million plus VAT. After its short period in Italy, Bugatti has now been back at its old headquarters in Molsheim, France, for almost 20 years. This is where Ettore Bugatti produced the very first vehicles that bore his name at the end of 1909.
