Theresa Greenfield is challenging GOP Sen. Joni Ernst for US Senate in Iowa. Polls in Iowa closed at 9 p.m. local time and the results are rolling in, says Business Insider. Ernst is an Iowa Army National Guard veteran and was first elected to the US Senate in 2014. Theresa Greenfield is an urban planner, real estate developer, and first-time political candidate. Ernst serves on the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, Armed Services, and Environment and Public Works. Currently, the US Senate is made up of 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats, and two independents.
Republican congressman Cory Gardner won the U.S. Senate race in Colorado beating first term senator Mark Udall in a heated race. Deborah Lutterbeck reports.
Business Insider reports that a Republican congressional candidate in Iowa is set to win her race by just six votes after a recount. GOP candidate Mariannette Miller-Meeks is set to win Iowa's second Congressional District. She will beat Democrat Rita Hart by just 0.001% of the vote. Miller-Meeks was initially named as the winner of the race. She flipped Iowa's second congressional district from blue to red after 13 years of Democratic control. However, her opponent asked for a recount due to the narrow nature of Miller-Meeks' win.
CNN projects that South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham has held on to his Senate seat. Graham will return to the Senate for a fourth term after defeating Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison. South Carolina is a conservative state that hasn't elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1998. CNN has also projected that President Donald Trump will win the state's 9 electoral votes. Graham serves as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Graham pushed through Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation just days before the election. Graham had said previously that he would not appoint a Supreme Court judge during an election year.
Veteran US politician Mitch McConnell, 82, says he would step down as leader of the Republican Party in the Senate later this year, ending his tenure as the longest-serving Senate leader in American history.
