The United States will restore diplomatic relations it severed with Cuba more than 50 years ago, a major policy shift ending decades of hostile ties with the communist-ruled island, President Barack Obama said on Wednesday. Nathan Frandino reports.

The first scheduled commercial American flight to Cuba in 55 years, flown by low-cost airline JetBlue, landed in Abel Santamaria Airport in Santa Clara on Wednesday after departing from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport earlier in the day. US Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx, along with other passengers of the inaugural flight were greeted with applause as they touched down for the historic occasion. The flight marks the beginning of what will soon be a maximum of 110 daily flights to Cuba from the US, operated by various carriers alongside JetBlue, including American Airlines, Delta, Frontier, Southwest and Silver Airways. This development is part of a recent 'thaw' in Cuban-American relations that happened on the initiative of President Obama after over 5 decades of strained relations caused by the Cold War.
