North Korea fired an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) over Japan on Tuesday, prompting Tokyo to activate the country's missile alert system and order people to take shelter. The last time North Korea fired a missile over Japan was in 2017, at the height of a period of "fire and fury" when Pyongyang's leader Kim Jong Un traded insults with then-US president Donald Trump. South Korea's military said it had detected the launch of an IRBM, which flew around 4,500 km (2800 miles) at an altitude of about 970 km and speeds of around Mach 17. IMAGES
The United States says it remains committed to talks with North Korea despite its "provocations" after leader Kim Jong Un vowed to accelerate nuclear work. "We do remain open to engaging in diplomacy and dialogue with the DPRK" on ending its nuclear program, State Department spokesperson Ned Price says, referring to the North by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Seoul, Sep 28 (EFE/EPA).- South Korea’s Joint Chief of Staff confirmed North Korea launched a single-projectile short-range missile Tuesday into the Sea of Japan.The launch occurred in the country’s east at about 6.40 am on Tuesday (21.40 GMT on Monday), triggering an emergency meeting of the National Security Committee "to analyze the launch of the short-range missile." and "discuss countermeasures," the government said.Seoul said it regretted the launch came at a sensitive time for political stability on the Korean peninsula and is analyzing more details about the test and "its intentions".
