Red carpet and stanchions were also placed in front of the machine. Before the introduction of the first ATM on June 27, 1967, outside a Barclay's Bank depository in Enfield, north London, people were forced to wait in line at the bank to withdraw cash. The ATM was surely a major technological advancement at the time and greatly improved economic conditions.
