Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be making a lot of firsts when she enters the White House in January. She'll be the first Black, Indian, and South Asian to be Vice President--not to mention the first woman. According to Business Insider, black women and girls across America cried and cheered on news of Joe Biden and Harris's victory. Harris's niece tweeted on Saturday that her 4-year-old exclaimed, 'BLACK GIRLS ARE WELCOME TO BE PRESIDENT!' Pat Duncan is sixty years older, and is the national co-chair of Black Women For Biden in Colorado. She says Harris is a unifying force for America. The White House accused U.S. senators of a "shameful display of cowardice" and said they failed the American people by not advancing any gun control measures after the Orlando massacre. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
The White House says it had "warned" Iran after President Joe Biden said Tehran was threatening a significant attack on Israel over a strike that destroyed an Iranian consulate building in Damascus. SOUNDBITE
"We were outraged to learn of an IDF (Israel Defense Forces, ed) strike that killed a number of civilian humanitarian workers yesterday from the World Central Kitchen," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby tells reporters during a briefing at the White House. SOUNDBITE
The White House will demand more information from Israel after "deeply concerning" reports of bodies found strewn at Gaza's largest hospital complex as Israeli forces pulled out after an intensive military operation there. "It is deeply concerning if it's true. We are reaching out to the Israeli government to get more information," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tells reporters in Washington. SOUNDBITE
The White House says it is concerned by an Israeli move to ban broadcasts of Qatari news channel Al Jazeera in the country, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged to enforce "immediately." "I'm going to refer to Israel for what they may or may not be considering," said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. "If it is true, a move like this is concerning." SOUNDBITE
