Migrants rescued by a ship chartered by NGOs disembark in Sicily and are taken care of by the authorities. The Ocean Viking, chartered by SOS Méditerranée in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), rescued 114 people on December 16, including minors and two newborns who were on an inflatable boat in distress in international waters off the coast of Libya. A group of 73 migrants mainly from Bangladesh are rescued by an Italian Guardia di Finanza vessel in the Mediterranean sea and brought to Lampedusa. More than 1,400 migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa at the weekend, sparking calls from far-right politicians for action to stem the flow, amid fresh moves by Italian authorities against the rescue boats who operate in the central Mediterranean.
