Federal agents have charged an Iraqi-born American citizen, described as an ex-military translator, for allegedly lying about pledging allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State.
Brazil Minister of Justice and Citizenship, Alexandre de Moraes, dismissed the threat of an attack during the Rio Olympic Games, during a press conference in Brasilia on Thursday. Moraes' statement comes after the Justice Ministry announced that ten people were arrested, earlier on Thursday, on suspicion of planning terrorist acts during the games. The group are also accused of being inspired so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), according to the ministry's statement.
US Defence Secretary Ash Carter spoke at a press conference at Joint Base Andrews, Washington DC on Wednesday to share the progress of the anti-ISIL coalition talks held the same day. He reiterated that the anti-IS campaign's primary focus was the downfall of Mosul and Raqqa but stressed that the rebuilding and governance of the territory was also a significant strategic priority.
