China on Monday called for restraint by "all parties" to avoid further escalation in the Ukraine crisis, urging a diplomatic solution during an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting. "At present, all parties concerned must exercise restraint and avoid any action that may fuel tensions. We welcome and encourage every effort for a diplomatic solution and call on all parties concerned to continue dialogue and consultation, and seek reasonable solutions to address each other's concerns on the basis of equality and mutual respect," said China ambassador to the United Nations Zhang Jun. During a UN press briefing, UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk, says that countries with "influence" on the Myanmar military must do all they can to protect "all civilians in the Rakhine State and prevent another episode of horrendous persecution of the Rohingya." SOUNDBITE
US President Joe Biden says during his State of the Union address that Ukraine is capable of stopping Putin if the US provides Kyiv the "weapons it needs to defend itself." SOUNDBITE
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron urges members of the US Congress to approve a Ukraine aid package. "We should be standing up for freedom, standing up for the right of this country to defend itself and making sure that Putin doesn't win," he says while on a visit to Bulgaria. The Republican leader of the US House of Representatives blocked war aid for Ukraine on February 13, ignoring President Joe Biden's plea that passing the bill was vital for standing up to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The White House applauds the adoption of the foreign aid legislation and urges the US lower House to approve the long-delayed funding for Ukraine's war efforts against Russia. "The president urges the House to send this legislation to his desk immediately so that he can sign it into law," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre tells reporters. SOUNDBITE
