Devastation and ruin lay over the Mexican capital after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Mexico, toppling dozens of buildings and leaving millions without power on Tuesday. Hundreds of regular citizens joined emergency services and members of the military in searching for survivors still trapped under the debris of collapsed buildings.
A major 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit southeastern Turkey on Monday, the US Geological Survey said, levelling buildings across several cities and causing damage in neighbouring Syria. The quake struck at 04:17 am local time (0117 GMT) at a depth of about 17.9 kilometres (11 miles), the US agency said, with a 6.7-magnitude aftershock striking 15 minutes later. IMAGES
An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 hit the Croatian capital Zagreb, causing extensive damage in the city centre and scenes of panic.
