As the 1914 summer sun heats up mainland Europe, the First World War crashes down across the fractured continent. Living in Paris, Arthur Knaap yearns to serve, protect and defend his beloved nation and joins the Foreign Legion. Before long, Arthur is plunged into the cold, consuming darkness of frontline trench warfare. As the men who stand beside hime lose their limbs, their friends and their hope, the true horror of the conflict refuses to abate. 1755, Denemarken. Kapitein Ludvig Kahlen heeft zichzelf als doel gesteld de ongetemde Deense heide leefbaar te maken om in naam van koning Frederik V een kolonie te bouwen. In ruil hiervoor verwacht hij een koninklijke titel met bijbehorende eer en rijkdom. Kahlen heeft er echter al snel een vijand bij. Volgens de meedogenloze landeigenaar Frederik de Schinkel is het stuk grond namelijk al in zijn bezit. Wanneer De Schinkel ontdekt dat twee van zijn arbeiders zijn ontsnapt om zich bij Kahlen aan te sluiten, zweert hij wraak. Kahlen laat zich niet intimideren en gaat de strijd aan, waarbij hij zowel zijn eigen leven als dat van zijn opkomende gemeenschap op het spel zet. 1755, Danemark. En échange, il attend un titre royal accompagné d'honneurs et de richesses. Cependant, Kahlen a rapidement un ennemi sur place. En effet, selon l'impitoyable propriétaire terrien Frederik de Schinkel, le terrain est déjà en sa possession. Lorsque De Schinkel découvre que deux de ses ouvriers se sont échappés pour rejoindre Kahlen, il jure de se venger. Kahlen ne se laisse pas intimider et entre dans la mêlée, au péril de sa vie et de celle de sa communauté naissante.
