The German Vice Chancellor is starting high level talks with officials in Tehran following the nuclear accord while the U.S. Secretary of Defense finesses strained political relations between the U.S. and Israel. Julie Noce reports.
Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's envoy at the Iran nuclear deal talks, arrives at the Palais Coburg in Vienna, where the IAEA-brokered talks are set to resume in hopes of finding a way to save the historic accord brokered in 2015. This is the first time since March that all the parties (Iran, Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and Germany) are meeting, with the participation of the United States, in order to save the agreement, which was supposed to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring atomic weapons. The quarterly IAEA Board of Governors meeting opens in Vienna amid stalled talks to revive a 2015 nuclear deal, as major European countries and the United States are expected to seek to censure Iran. Russian ambassador Mikhail Ulaynov says the conclusion of the Iran nuclear talks "does not depend on Russia only," reacting to a call by the EU to pause the process, days after fresh demands from Moscow reagrding Western sanctions imposed after its invasion of Ukraine complicated negotiations.
