US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in calls Monday urged all sides in the Middle East to avoid "escalation," his spokesman says, as fears grew of an imminent Iranian counterattack on Israel. "It's important that all parties take steps over the coming days to refrain from escalation and calm tensions," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters, describing Blinken's telephone calls in the region. International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi calls on Iran to adopt "concrete" measures to help bolster cooperation on the country's nuclear programme. Grossi was speaking at a news conference in the Iranian city of Isfahan. SOUNDBITE
The EU says that it is "alarmed by the alleged Israeli strike" on the Iranian consulate in Syria's Damascus and warns against any escalation after Tehran vowed revenge. "In this highly tense regional situation, it is really of an utmost importance to show restraint because the further escalation in the region is in no one's interests," EU spokesperson Peter Stano says.
