French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin says he has instructed police to show "great moderation" toward farmers who have blocked highways as part of a nationwide protest movement against agricultural policies. SOUNDBITE
Representatives of the majority farming unions, Arnaud Rousseau (FNSEA) and Arnaud Gaillot (Jeunes Agriculteurs), arrive at Matignon to meet French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal and obtain "concrete measures" to deal with farmers' anger. IMAGES
Trial resumes for Benoit Feuillu and four other alleged organisers of two banned demonstrations in western rural France. The activists argue they fight to preserve water and are opposing large artificials reservoirs or "bassines" which they see as a way to monopolise water resources for the farming industry. in October 2022 and specially, in March 2023, the protests turned into violent clashes with police with many protesters injured.
