    A US Coast Guard employee, Chief Petty Officer Brad Fitzpatrick rescued two people and six dogs from a flooded home in Wilmington, North Carolina, after Hurricane Florence and its remnants swept through the area. He worked with other aircrews throughout the day in extreme conditions, encountering submerged barbed wire fencing, floating fire-ant beds, and chest-deep water to save people and animals from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Florence.

  • Real Life Robinson Crusoe! Sailor Stranded on Tiny Island for 5 Days Finally Rescued

    A Russian sailor travelling solo from Stockholm to Spain was shipwrecked on a tiny bit of rock near the remote Swedish island of Stora Lundskar in the Baltic Sea last week, losing all his communication equipment in the accident. The unnamed Russian man wrote the word HELP in moss which he collected from the island in the hope that a passing aircraft might see it. A helicopter patrol saw the letters and brought to a nearby hospital in Linkoping for treatment.

  • Drowning Elephant Safely Returned to Shore Following Rescue Operation

    Sri Lankan naval personnel carried out a 12-hour rescue operation of an elephant found awash at sea, a whole 5 miles from the northeast coast of Colombo, on Wednesday. A Fast Attack Craft military ship carrying out a routine patrol spotted the large mammal, which had been dragged out to sea by a strong current, and called for backup. Three ships were deployed during the rescue effort which gently guided the distressed animal to the shore using ropes. Once back on land, the team handed the elephant over to the Department of Wildlife, which had provided remote advisory help during the operation.
