A bizarre ritual in the Indian village of Bhidawad sees scores of men lie down on the road while a herd of cattle is driven right over them. Crowds stand on either side, forcing the cows to travel over a narrow path where the worshippers lie. The men willingly get trampled by cows and bulls because they believe this act will cleanse them of their troubles and bless them with prosperity.

If you didn't know, some Hindus absolutely venerate cows. Bovines are considered to be a sacred creature and a symbol of all living things. Many states in India have outlawed the killing of cows and the consumption of beef. However, some Hindu worshippers have taken the veneration of cattle to a new level by opening up an emergency medical service to treat sick or injured bovines.
Dozens of Hindu worshippers celebrated Govardhana Puja by allowing cows to trample them in the Indian city of Bhidawad. Worshippers lay prostrate on the ground while other people participating in the ritual lead sacred cows to walk right over the laying worshippers. The cattle, some weighing up to 400 pounds, then march through, sometimes stepping on the back or legs of the people taking part in the ritual. The centuries old ritual is meant to encourage God to answer their prayers and is performed after the holy day of Diwali.
