A few weeks ago, Amazon introduced their cheapest Fire tablet ever. You might think that a $50 tablet comes with a pretty limited experience, but not in this case. Turns out you can even shop for apps and games in Google Play on it. The Appstore doesn’t offer quite as many choices as Google Play, though, and there are a few key apps that you won’t find there — like Gmail, YouTube, and Netflix. Fortunately, getting them installed isn’t all that hard any more. You don’t even need to root your Fire tablet to do it. As Liliputing reported over the weekend, all you have to do is run a batch file put together by an XDA forums user, which you can find online at Geek.com.
Google Play Music has launched a free, ad-supported version of its streaming service that allows users to browse a massive library of 30 million songs and listen to curated playlists for many occasions. The service is currently available online and as an app for iOS and Android devices. Google has been offering an ad-free subscription version of Google Play Music for some time, allowing listeners to take their music offline and use background features for music videos on YouTube.
Dozens of states and the District of Columbia have begun legal action against Google in the United States over what they allege is monopolistic behaviour in its Google Play app download store. The case argues that the tech giant blocks competition through technical and other barriers, but the company has described the case as "strange" and "meritless". Also today, a positive signal for the French tourism sector, as hotel bookings have increased at the start of the summer season.
