Description

Got allergies? You can blame the Neanderthals 01:31 (CNN)It may be time to add more branches to the human family tree. Researchers have come up with a estimation tool to determine the traits we have in common with early humans, Neanderthals and Denisovans, and how our histories crossed paths. In the process of comparing these ancient populations from 50,000 to 70,000 years ago against modern ones, the researchers encountered an intriguing question mark.

  • Americans Want Biden To Prioritize Small Businesses

Spencer Platt/Getty Images Americans want President Joe Biden to prioritize small business aid and provide further relief from the pandemic. Richard Prisinzano, director of policy analysis at the Penn Wharton Budget Model, said that more aid is necessary to help businesses, but it is reliant on vaccine distribution and the pandemic timeline. Other components of Biden's stimulus proposal, like the stimulus checks and moratoriums on evictions, will also help small businesses. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Small businesses have been hit hard throughout the pandemic, and President Joe Biden intends to provide relief through his stimulus proposal unveiled last Thursday.

  • Biden: Merrick Garland For Attorney General

(CNN)President-elect Joe Biden has decided to nominate Judge Merrick Garland as attorney general, people familiar with the matter tell CNN, a long-awaited decision that was moved toward completion Wednesday as it became apparent that Democrats were on the brink of winning control of the Senate. While Garland has been a top contender for weeks, concerns about the vacancy his selection would create on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia raised alarm bells among Biden and many advisers who believed Senate Republicans would block any nomination to that seat.

  • In Another Swipe At Trump, AG Barr Won't Investigate Hunter Biden Or Voter Fraud

Outgoing US Attorney General Bill Barr most likely infuriated President Donald Trump even more on Monday. That's when he said he wouldn't be appointing special counsels to investigate either President-elect Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden or election fraud Business Insider reports Trump has reportedly pushed for conservative attorney Sidney Powell as a special prosecutor to investigate the matter. Powell was kicked off Trump's legal team after promoting a number of fringe conspiracy theories about election fraud. Barr's announcement signals another significant break with the president, who continues to insist the election was somehow stolen from him. If I thought a special counsel at this stage was the right tool and was appropriate, I would name one. But I haven't, and I'm not going to. US Attorney General William Barr

  • Report: HHS's COVID-19 Data For Availability Of Beds, Meds, PPE Varies Wildly

When COVID-19 reached the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Protection tracked data related to its spread. However, President Donald Trump's coronavirus task force wrested control from the CDC, with the launch of HHS Protect. The main pandemic data tracking system is run by the Department of Health and Human Services. Federal and state officials use HHS Protect’s data to assess the burden of disease across the country and allocate scarce resources, from medicines to PPE. The problem is, HHS Protect’s data often diverge dramatically from those collected by other sources, including hospitals, states, and federal agencies. And according to Science Magazine, the data also varies from the apparent reality on the ground. A CDC internal analysis completed this month shows HHS Protect's data problems are a national problem. The HHS Protect data are poor quality, inconsistent with state reports, and the analysis is slipshod. And the pressure on hospitals is through the roof. Confidential Source, CDC
