Over 6,000 Migrants Saved From The Sea In A Day

More than six thousand migrants were rescued on October 3rd as they tried to reach Europe on about forty boats. Italy's coast guard said today's numbers are one of the highest in a single day. A statement said at least nine migrants had died already. About ten ships from the coast guard, the navy and humanitarian organizations were involved in the rescues, most of which happened about thirty miles off the coast of Libya. One ship rescued about 725 migrants on a single rubber boat. October 3rd marked the third anniversary of the sinking of a migrant boat off Lampedusa, where almost four hundred people died. According to the International Organization for Migration, around one hundred and thirty-two thousand migrants have arrived in Italy since the start of the year. More than three thousand have died all together.
