Fighting rages on in Gaza, more than a month after Hamas's shock October 7 attack triggered a furious response from Israel aimed at destroying the Islamist militant group. More than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, were killed in Israel in the attack, according to Israeli officials. A dust storm tore through Colorado on Friday, with gusty north winds exceeding 60 miles per hour. According to Gizmodo, the storm was so ridiculously huge that it was visible from space. The storm severely limited visibility on major roadways. A fatal crash killed one person and injured up to 15 others. A dust storm warning remained in effect in the southeastern portion of the state throughout the day. The National Weather Service also issued a 'blowing dust warning' for the region, as the strong winds increased 'critical fire danger.'
A wind-whipped wildfire ravaged the remote California mountain community of Walker on Tuesday, killing one person. HuffPost reports the ferocious inferno struck suddenly at midday during strong winds high in the eastern Sierra Nevada. The fire destroyed more than 80 structures, including homes, in the unincorporated town near the Nevada state line. By early Wednesday, rain and snow reduced the fire to smoldering remnants after it scorched over 32 square miles. Residents fled Walker and the towns of Coleville and Topaz. The Carson Valley Inn, to the north in Nevada, was a designated evacuation point. About 130 rooms are being used to house people for several days.
Wildfires in the hills of Southern California have burned through more than 100,000 acres in an around Ventura County, destroying more than 300 homes, business, and other buildings. Tens of thousands have been evacuated as over 1,100 firefighters fought to contain the blaze. Claire and Dennis Jenks were among those that fled the fire with little more than what they could carry. However, when they returned to their home of 40 years on Wednesday, all they found was a pile of smouldering remains.
A huge wildfire broke out in the hills near Santa Paula, California on Monday. It's rapid spread is helped along by gusts sweeping through the area at 50 miles per hour. At least 27,000 have been evacuated as of Tuesday. One person was killed when their car rolled over as they attempted to evacuate. California Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency for Venture County. Over 1,100 firefighter have gathered to battle the blaze.
