Auschwitz-Birkenau, one of the most infamous and reviled sites in Europe, hosted the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis himself. Pope Francis visited the concentration camp on Friday during his visit to Poland. The leader of Catholicism came to Poland to celebrate World Youth Day and chose to devote Friday to commemorate suffering. The Pope sat in silent contemplation and prayer upon arrival at a site where some of most tragic human suffering of modern European history happened.
[As he arrived for Holy Mass at the Black Madonna shrine in Poland on Thursday, Pope Francis missed a step and took a nasty spill. Nearby clergymen rushed to the aid of the head of the Catholic Church and helped him to his feet.
The Pope married two flight attendants in a mid-air wedding on a plane during his trip to Chile on Thursday. Bride Paula Podest and groom Carlos Ciuffardi said "I do" after Francis agreed to conduct the ceremony on the flight from Santiago to Iquique. They had been married in a civil service in 2010 but had been unable to follow up with a church ceremony because of the Feb. 27, 2010, earthquake that rocked Chile. The wedding certificate was drafted and signed on an airline sheet of paper. Vatican officials stated the episode marked the first time a pontiff ever married a couple on a papal plane.

Pope Francis received Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan at the Santa Marta residence in Vatican City on Monday. The two men swapped books after their conversation, which centred on ways of connecting people across the world. The discussion revolved around how to use communication technologies to alleviate poverty, encourage a culture of encounter, and deliver a message of hope to those most in need.
