A US Coast Guard employee, Chief Petty Officer Brad Fitzpatrick rescued two people and six dogs from a flooded home in Wilmington, North Carolina, after Hurricane Florence and its remnants swept through the area. He worked with other aircrews throughout the day in extreme conditions, encountering submerged barbed wire fencing, floating fire-ant beds, and chest-deep water to save people and animals from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Florence.
This wild baby elephant fell into a hole filled with mud while traveling with his herd in the Nilgiris Mountains in southern India. Trumpeting loudly in panic and fear, the elephant and his family alerted forest workers, who mounted a full scale rescue operation. Dozens of workers, tamed elephants, heavy vehicles, and a bulldozer worked five gruelling hours before finally freeing the trapped pachyderm.

A Russian family made an unexpected discovery on their way home from a fishing trip in Arkhangelsk, as shown in footage that emerged on Monday. Ludmila Janushko and her husband spotted what looked like a small animal at the side of the road and pulled over to check on it. On closer inspection, the ball of fur turned out to be a young seal pup stranded on land.
