The European Union says it has allocated 20 million euros ($21.8 million) worth of humanitarian aid to Haiti after gang violence plunged the Caribbean country into renewed chaos. "An unprecedented level of gang violence is dramatically increasing humanitarian needs across the country. The funding will help humanitarian partners to address the most urgent needs of the population," says European Commission spokesman Balazs Ujvari. SOUNDBITE
At least 264 suspected gang members in Haiti have been killed by vigilante groups since April, the UN representative in the violence-wracked country says, voicing concern at the trend. "The appearance of vigilante groups adds another layer of complexity. Since April, BINUH (United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti) has documented the killing of at least 264 alleged gang members by vigilante groups," Maria Isabel Salvador tells the Security Council. Les Cayes, Aug 22 (EFE).- The main armed gangs in Haiti said Sunday they have accepted a truce to allow the distribution of humanitarian aid to the thousands affected by the earthquake last week, which caused at least 2,207 deaths and more than 12,000 injured.
