The United States will deploy 1,500 additional troops to the border with Mexico, the Pentagon says, ahead of an expected surge of migrants when Covid-era restrictions are lifted next week. "For 90 days, these 1,500 military personnel, who will be sourced from the active duty component, will fill critical capability gaps, such as ground-based detection and monitoring, data entry, and warehouse support," spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder tells reporters during a press conference. On the last day of a NATO summit in Madrid, United States President Joe Biden says that the US "should sell" modern F-16 fighter jets to Turkey when asked by a journalist as to whether he offered them to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a quid pro quo. "It's not in our interest not to do that", he adds. SOUNDBITE
"We also regret the order to deploy Russian troops into eastern Ukraine, reportedly on a peacekeeping mission," says United Nations Under-Secretary-General Under-Secretary-General for peacebuilding Rosemary DiCarlo. "These developments follow the decision to order a mass evacuation of civilian residents of Donetsk and Lugansk into the Russian Federation. We are concerned by the escalating shelling across the contact line." SOUNDBITE
The air show, organised by both the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Rostec State Corporation, involved Russian helicopters such as the Mi-26, Mi-35, Ka-52 models, as well as aircraft such as the Aermacchi MB-339s, T-50 and Sukhoi Su-34. The event, taking place from July 18-23, is set to feature some 84 aircraft from eight airborne crews performing over the course of the event, in which more than 770 companies representing 30 countries will participate.
The new MiG-35, a classified 4++ generation Russian fighter jet, was showcased at the MAKS-2017 air show in Zhukovski, Moscow region, on Tuesday. The multifunctional fighter jet has enhanced maneuverability and is designed to overcome large-scale air defence systems. The jet will reportedly be taken into service in 2018, after tests are completed, with plans to export a version of the model to more than 30 different countries.
